Kosrae, Just as It Is

Kosrae may never become highly developed, and that is part of what makes it so special. In many ways, it feels like Hawaii may have felt decades ago, quiet, lush, and deeply connected to the rhythms of the ocean, mountains, and island life.

A single paved road nearly circles the 42-square-mile island, with the ocean on one side and green mountains on the other. Fruit trees, tropical jungle, and every shade of green surround you. Kosrae is not crowded, and life here moves at a slower, more peaceful pace.

Many Kosraeans live abroad because there are limited jobs on the island, but for many, the hope is always to return home to family, culture, and the way of life that makes Kosrae unlike anywhere else.

Here are some tips and advice for visiting Kosrae in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Airline

Most visitors arrive via United Airlines into Kosrae International Airport (KSA). Check their website for the current flight schedule, as it has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic. You can arrive through Guam (GUM) or through Honolulu, Hawaii (HNL). The flight takes you through multiple islands, including Chuuk (TKK), Pohnpei (PNI), Kwajalein (), and Majuro (MAJ in the Marshall Islands). It is one of the most amazing flights you can take, landing and taking off from these beautiful islands in the middle of the vast ocean.

The only other way to arrive is by sailing vessel, but it takes much longer to arrive.

Weather

The weather is amazing all year round. Some months are better for diving (summer months), while other months are better for surfing (winter months) but can be more rainy. But it will always be warm and breezy!

Currency

The U.S dollar is the official currency used in Kosrae and throughout Micronesia. There are ATMs available throughout the island, and most of the grocery stores and hotels take credit card.

Language

The official language of Kosrae is Kosraean, although English is spoken by most people and in government discourse. In 1945, administration over Kosrae passed to the United States, which ruled the island as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Students are taught English in the school system.

Customs

US citizens do not need a Visa to enter, but citizens of other countries must present a valid passport (at least 6 months before expiration) and should be up to date on their vaccinations for diseases and COVID.
